Women’s Golf Report – July 2015

The tumultuous weather over the past month or so has played havoc with the ladies golf schedule but despite the rain and freezing cold winds a few crucial matches have managed to be played.

23rd June was a single stableford event and the playing conditions made for a low scoring game. Cath Pank was the winner on the day with 30 points. The runner up was Aoauli Carrett on 27 pts on a countback from Pat Collier, Sandra Mitchell and Dot Burton. Division 1 Nearest the Pin was won by Sue Earle and Div. 2 by Sandra Mitchell. The longest walk was taken out by Jan Perkins. Well done ladies.

30th June A good field turned out to contest the Wray Owen Monthly Medal for July. A Grade medal winner was Pennie Conlon with a credible 71 nett with Aoauli Carret as runner up with 74 nett. Pat Stevens shot a lovely round of 69 to take the B Grade Medal with Lynn Loveday runner up with 71.

Jan Perkins made a good comeback with 80 with Sandra Mitchell as runner up on 83. Ball rundown went to Liz Steeden, Pat Leach and Pat Collier. Drive & Pitch Div. 2 was won by Alice Harrison and Div. 2 by Lyn Loveday who had a very busy day as she also managed to win the Putting Competition.

7th July was the first round of the Foursomes Championships and even though it was a freezing cold morning all the ladies turned up the brave the elements. With everyone rugged up like polar bears it was a bit difficult to play free flowing golf but two women who managed the conditions very well were Pat Leach and Sue Earle who came in the winners on the day with a sizzling 69 ½ nett. The runner ups, with a hard fought 74, were Liz Sikora and Pennie Conlon. Ball Rundown went to Lynn Loveday/Sandra Marshall (74 ½), Linda Innes/Denise Johnson (who was still wishing she was on a beach in Fiji) with 76 and Jan Perkins/Alice Harrison (78).

14th July was the second round of the Foursomes Championships and even though all prayed to gods of golf the weather didn’t improve much with all players having to contend with freezing cold and gusty winds. The team of Pat Stevens and Dot Burton held their game together to take the day with a hard fought 78 ½ nett on a countback from Sue Earle and Pat Leach. Ball rundown went to Pat Collier/Cheryl Bargwanna also with 78 ½, Denise Johnson and Linda Innes (80) and Lyn Loveday/Sandra Marshall (82 ½).

Despite a late charge by other teams the combination of Sue Earle and Pat Leach was too strong and they held on to become this year’s Gross Champions with a combined gross score of 195. Gross Runner ups with 208 was the pairing of Liz Sikora and Pennie Conlon. Nett Champions were the sometimes erratic and quite often ridiculous teaming of Denise Johnson and Linda Innes (and they still don’t know how it happened) with 156 nett closely followed by second place Lynn Loveday and Sandra Marshall with157. Well done ladies and hopefully we can have slightly less challenging conditions for our friendly with Callala next week…..Sandi Bunker.
