High Scoring difficult at Kiama
A fine start on a cloudy day wasn’t enough to help the
majority of players at the April game for the Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen’s social golf club at Kiama on the 19th April 2015. Michael Pearce lead the way with an outstanding 46 points to be a clear winner. Don’t worry Michael, the handicapper will deal with you!
Peter Harvey was the first runner-up on a count-back from Les Gernyi, both recording a respectable 38 points. Peter also won the nearest the pin on the 6th hole, which he finished off with a birdie.
Apart from the major prize winners, no other player broke their handicap. The rest of the field found the course pretty tough, getting off the fairways proved to be very troublesome, with a few golfers even venturing out to the rail lines along the 12th hole boundary.
Charlie Hawkins and Ashleigh Hoogwerf missed the podium, but took home the prizes for Front 9 and Back 9 respectively. Ashleigh had a good day, also winning the nearest the pins on the 11th and 14th holes.
Mark McClellan took home the Moto Parts on The Move voucher for his nearest the pin on the 4th hole as well as the A-Grade longest drive, albeit that he was out-driven by Les Gernyi who won the B-Grade longest drive. Luke Bowden wasn’t a contender for the Men’s A-Grade longest drive after failing to get his tee shot past the ladies tee! Mark could have finished among the
major placegetters, except for experiencing some difficulty and taking 4 shots to get out of a bunker on the 17th hole.
Gary de Banke rounded out men’s prize winners taking out the Stanley Johns Menswear voucher for his drive and pitch on the 10th.
President Judy Wakeford took out the ladies longest drive, but there was no winner of the
ladies drive and pitch.
The highlight of Bob Pender’s day was sinking a 30 foot putt from off the green on the 2nd hole, but unfortunately Bob couldn’t maintain this form.
Unluckiest player on the day was Paul Kay, who after playing a good shot with his wedge on the 8th hole, lost his grip and then watched his club disappear into the water, never to be seen again.
