Shoalhaven Ex-Servos Carve Up Calderwood

The Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemens Social Golf Club held its August match at the Calderwood Golf Club on the 16th August and it proved to be one of the most tightly contested competitions this year.

One would like to think it was due everyone practicing diligently since the last game where no one broke par, but it was probably more likely that the perfect conditions and a bit on run of the course that brought in some fantastic scores.

Amazingly we had a 4 way count-back for the major prizes.  The winner on the day was Craig Muller with an excellent 44 points.  Craig made light work of the Par 5s and eagled the 5th and birdied the 7th on the way to his winning score and also took out the Stanley Johns Menswear Drive and Pitch on the 15th.

Congratulations also to the ‘runners-up’ (also with 44 points) Ash Hoogwerf, Muzz Smith and Vinne Evans.  I bet the boys all thought they had the winner’s prize in the bag when they signed their cards but instead they can look forward to our handicapper smiling as he removes multiple strokes from them just prior to the club championships commencing next month.

New members Vinne Evans and Matt Kelly had the best front and back nine scores of 25 and 22 respectively. NTPs were won by Peter Harvey, Jennifer Goodall, Vinne Evans and Matt Kelly. The Ladies Long Drive was won by Jennifer Goodall with a great drive not too far behind the B-Grade Mens LD winner Ash Hoogwert.  The Mens A-Grade LD looked like it had no takers until the last drive of the day when Todd Richter ripped a huge ball down the middle and then proceeded to chip in for a birdie. He probably had to do that based on his putting game for the rest of the round.

The 18th LD also tested Muzz Smith who managed to provide the shortest long drive of the day into the dam in front of the tee. To be fair however, he was generally driving well on the day and had back-back birdies on the 10th and 11th. His playing partner John Van Diejen set the precedent by also having back-back birdies on the 9th and 10th

Scores over 40 points were also recorded  by Mark McClellan, John van Diejen, Michael Peace, Luke Bowden, Jennifer Goodall, Charlie Hawkins. Well done.

As usual at our Calderwood games, the club put on a free BBQ for the players. Many thanks to the early finishers who manned the BBQ, Bob Pender for his usual high standard in catering and for Toddie for ensuring liquid refreshments were available for the thirsty golfers.
